Mardi Gras: ‘No Refusal’ initiative to take place in Austin
The Austin Police Department is currently enforcing a ‘No Refusal’ initiative in order to deter drivers from getting behind the wheel if they are impaired during the Mardi Gras celebration.
The ‘No Refusal’ initiative began on Feb. 17 and will continue through Fat Tuesday, Feb. 21. It will run from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. every day. A ‘No Refusal’ weekend means that a person’s blood can be drawn if they refuse a breathalyzer and reasonable cause is found.
This initiative was created in order to be put into place on weekends that have a high number of drunk drivers. This usually includes holiday weekends and the Super Bowl because more parties are thrown. Last year, a total of 24 percent of all fatal traffic crashes involved alcohol.
