Naval Weapons Station in California interfering with garage door openers
When California residents recently began noticing that their garage door openers were on the fritz, they never imagined that it would be a matter of national security. As it turned out, the garage door openers were experiencing interference from a new communications system that was being used by a nearby Naval Weapons Station.
Garage door openers operate from 380-399.9 megahertz and are unlicensed by the federal government. The new communications system operates on this same frequency, and, so, was interfering with the frequency of the garage door openers. When asked about the situation, officials from the Federal Communications Commission stated that they are unable to tell residents when their communications will be broadcasted, as it is a threat to national security.
Residents who have been affected by the situation have been advised to contact the manufacturer of their garage door opener to buy a transmitter that operates on a different frequency system from the one being used by the Naval Weapons Station.
