Winter Safety Tips: Importance of Properly Functioning Carbon Monoxide Detectors

While having a properly functioning carbon monoxide detector is important year round, it is especially important during the winter months because you tend to keep all windows and doors closed during this time, which could potentially trap in carbon monoxide in a home or garage.

Carbon monoxide is particularly dangerous because it is odorless and very toxic. It most commonly comes from heaters and furnaces that are not working properly. Police officials have announced that this can be avoided if heating appliances in the home are checked are used in a safe fashion.

Another safety tip that was mentioned for the colder months of the year involves warming up cars while they are in the garage. If cars are heated up while parked in the garage with the door closed, the carbon monoxide will then build up in the home.

If you warm up your car in the garage before driving, make sure to crack the garage door or windows because the gas can build up very quickly. Carbon monoxide poisoning can feel like flu-like symptoms and include dizziness, vomiting and  nausea.
