Residents see more response from APD for non-emergency burglary calls

In a new pilot program, officers from the Austin Police Department are now being dispatched to every home that has been burglarized, whether or not anything was stolen.

In past years, calls made to 3-1-1, the APD’s non-emergency hotline, were often not immediately returned if they did not involve an injury or violence. With this pilot program, officers will be responding to every call that involves a burglary and will be fully investigating each incident.

One Austin resident has already seen the benefits of the new program. She recently called 3-1-1 after a burglar entered into her home through her garage door but stole nothing. An officer was still dispatched to the home and took a full report of the incident. The APD is hoping to provide residents with a better sense of security and to decrease the number of burglaries in Austin with this program.

Homeowners can help protect themselves from burglaries by installing gates around their home.
