Legendary Austin homebuilder passes on

Last week, legendary Austin homebuilder Nash Phillips passed away at the age of 90 at Seton Medical Center.  Professionals in Austin’s real estate and home construction markets recognize Phillips as the greatest contributor to the city’s residential development.

Phillips created the homebuilding company, Nash Phillips/Copus Builders Inc. in 1945.  The company eventually grew to be one of the nation’s largest private home building businesses.  “They controlled more than 65 percent of all single-family homes built in the Austin area and over 80 percent of all multifamily construction.  They oversaw more of the market by themselves than the top 10 builders in Austin do now, combined,” stated a former employee of the company, Mark Sprague.

Over the four decades Phillips’s business was in operations, Nash Phillips/Copus Builders Inc. built more than 50,000 homes in Austin and surrounding suburbs.  Phillips also later went on to form another company called Wilshire Homes.
