Austinites raise money for local icon

Posted on March 6th, 2012 No Comments

An Austin icon, Leslie Cochran, is currently still in critical condition after being found unconscious on Feb. 16. Local residents have joined together in order to raise funds for medical costs.

Cochran was transferred to hospice care  last week and sources close to the man have stated that there is no “expectation of his recovery.”

Officials have said that the current condition is a result of a motorcycle accident that occurred 25 years ago as well as a head injury suffered when he tripped off a curb in 2009. Cochran has suffered seizures at least once a month since this incident.

Friends close to the  man stated that he usually knew when they were coming and would check himself into the hospital. In recent times, Cochran was unable to get to the hospital before seizures occurred.

Maintaining your garage door

Posted on February 28th, 2012 No Comments

A garage door is a big investment and it is important to keep the appropriate maintenance on the object so that it runs properly. This is why it is important to inspect a garage door occasionally to make sure there are no major flaws before it breaks completely.

A professional garage door company can come inspect you door periodically in order to make sure that everything works correctly. For example, the hardware is tightened appropriately,  tracks and hinges working, checking the opening gear, lubricating parts that allow the door to move,  and adjusting cables.

If you do regular inspections on the garage door, you may be able to prevent a larger problem from occurring.  There are also small things that a homeowner can do in order to keep the door operating smoothly. For example, putting petroleum jelly on the bottom of the door so that it does not stick to the ground when it is cold.

For example, replacing the door or panel is a job that requires professionals, but what some do not realize is that a screeching garage door is usually the hardware or old door screws that are rusty.

If you can check these minor issues before calling for repair, you will be able to save a lot of money. Also, if your garage door does not close all the way, it may be that the sensor is not placed in the correct area. City of Austin working to stop use of plastic, papers bags

Posted on December 13th, 2011 No Comments

The city of Austin is currently working to pass a ban that will stop the use of most plastic and papers bags throughout the city.

This plan is one of the broadest bans that has been introduced throughout the country and it has a goal to ban most plastic and paper bags in the city by 2016. While waiting for a total ban, in 2013, retailers can begin to charge 25 cents for plastic bags.

The next three year period will be a way to transition to a full ban, according to a draft. Since 2007, more than two dozen U.S. cities have put some type of bag ban into affect.

In Austin’s proposed idea, only a few places will be exempt from the ban. These include: restaurant carry out bags, wine and beer bags, bags that hold meat and fish, and bags for bulk food. Retailers will have to offer reusable bags that are made of a durable fabric.
